The MP5 (from German: Maschinenpistole 5, meaning machine pistol 5) is a submachine gun that is widely used in 2003 during the Cleaner Case. In Max Payne 3, it is replaced with the MPK, a stylized variant of the MP5.

Description

The weapon has an ammunition capacity of 30 rounds per magazine, with a fairly large reserve capacity of 270 (excluding the magazine in use). While it cannot be dual-wielded, the MP5 is useful in nearly every combat situation; it has a high rate of fire, moderately high damage potential, and a fixed scope. As is the case with submachine guns, spraying bullets is an effective way to deal with enemies, but taking advantage of its scope and high accuracy grants the user maximum efficiency. The MP5 makes a good substitute for the sniper rifle in all but the most extreme circumstances.

Behind the Scenes

• The MP5 in the game appears to be modeled after a converted HK-94, the U.S. import variant of the MP5 with a 16" barrel and a safe/semi-automatic trigger group. The key distinctive elements are the lack of the paddle release and muzzle brake, which the MP5 would actually have.
  • Semi-automatic variants of the MP5 converted to full-auto fire were often used in films as a stand-in for the MP5.
• The real MP5 uses the same cartridges as the Beretta 92 and Beretta 96, 9×19mm Parabellum, however in Max Payne 2 the 9mm pistol and the MP5 use different types of ammunition.
• The bolt and charging handle for the MP5 in Max Payne 2 is always locked back. In reality, this would prevent the weapon from being fired due to its action being open.
• A variant of the MP5, modelled after the MP5SD appears in a beta version of Max Payne. In the final product, an MP5SD with a more detailed model was cut, but can be still found in the game's files.
